Pilgrims to America 1620-2020

March 13, 2020 @ 10:00 am - March 15, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

Museum De Lakenhal will present an exhibition focusing on the Pilgrims experience in Leiden, which began in 1609.  The exhibit opens on March 13 and runs through June 21, 2020.

The museum will display artefacts from the time, focus on some key Pilgrims to give a more personal point of view to their story and involve the visitor.  The goal is to challenge people’s perspectives by placing them in the footsteps of historical figures.  The Pilgrims lived, worked and worshipped in this city of refugees for eleven years, before departing for the New World via England in 1620.

This exhibition is designed as a personal journey for the visitors, following the different environments and decisions that the Pilgrims faced. Its narration is up-close and personal, including testimonies of the past brought to life by a comprehensive route, interactive “reflection houses” challenging the visitors’ views by offering questioning on similar situations (What would it take me to leave home? What are the boundaries of my tolerance? What do I need to feel at home? What does it take to live peace?) and parallels with our modern world in each room.

Museum De Lakenhal hope to prompt visitors to re-exploring a 400-year-old tale:  the Pligrims voyage to America via the ship Mayflower.
